Honouring the century that has passed since the Trinity ring's birth, Cartier celebrates the milestone with the launch new pieces of jewellery and bags to the iconic collection
In 1924, an enduring Cartier icon, the Trinity ring, was conceived. Designed by Louis Cartier, the son of the namesake founder, the piece – comprising three interlocking bands in yellow gold, white gold and rose gold – was initially created for the French poet and playwright Jean Cocteau. Little did Louis know that the ring would become a symbol of the Maison’s values, a beacon of timeless craftsmanship.
Over its 100-year existence, the Trinity ring has remained a firm Cartier favourite, worn by everyone from Grace Kelly and Princess Diana to Kylie Jenner. Celebrating its anniversary milestone, Cartier is introducing new editions to the beloved Trinity jewellery collection, launching a reissued version of the extra-large Trinity bracelet from the early '00s and an extra-large iteration of the ring. Additionally, Cartier has released a brand new design based on Louis’ 1924 creation, which sees the three bands adopt a more angular, squared shape.
“The new design required a bespoke approach. Rather than starting from a hand-drawn sketch, we worked with volume by hand – kneading the material, rolling it, compressing it to isolate a creative direction,” explains Marie-Laure Cérède, the director of watchmaking & jewellery design at Cartier.
“To our surprise, an unexpected new form began to take shape: a square. Having found the shape, we had to determine its ideal proportions. With the finesse of a stone sculptor, we peeled back layer by layer, little by little, a tenth of a millimetre at a time. It was a job of utmost precision.”
Complementing the jewellery releases, Cartier unveils three new additions to its popular Trinity bag collection: a handbag, a mini shoulder bag, and a crossbody number, adorned with rings reflecting the Trinity spirit. Crafted from luxurious, supple leather, the pieces are available in various colours, from classic black to ruby red and mint green. A perfect pair with the new bags, Cartier also launches a selection of small leather goods, including a credit card holder and a little round pouch with versatile styling options.
