These mothers to be know how to style a bump
Maternity dressing is not what it once was. While traditionally, pregnancy fashion focussed on gently skimming over the bump, or drawing attention away from it, modern mothers have found other ways of embracing their changing bodies. Gone are the strictures of empire waists and flowing, loose smocks: today, the modern mother-to-be has a world of fashion inspiration to choose form.
Who could forget Rihanna’s first pregnancy reveal in 2021, a statement of such clear intent? A vintage autumn/winter 1996 Chanel padded puffer, floor-scraping low-rise Vetements jeans and a Christian Lacroix cross necklace made for one of 2022’s most iconic fashion moments. It was only to be upstaged by her second, clad in red latex Alaïa and Loewe, while storming the Superbowl stage. Or, perhaps your pregnancy moodboard is more along the lines of Adriana Lima’s bump-baring diamond cut-out dress at Cannes, which brought an unexpected touch of goth to maternity style?
What’s clear is that in 2022, maternity dressing has forsaken the rules. As Vogue Australia contributing editor Annie Brown writes, this bolder new wave “highlights that pregnancy and motherhood doesn’t mean the end of dressing sexily or creatively or that you can’t push the boundaries of personal style and taste in 'your condition'.”
Dress exactly how you want – and take inspiration from these stars while you’re at it.
