While effective skincare regimens are vital to maintain year round, it’s extremely important that you dote on your skin in the winter. Cold temperatures and low humidity leaves your skin with less moisture than during other seasons. Turning the heat up in your home has the same effect, and this dryness can lead to itchiness, irritation and discolouration.
Here are five tips to elevate your beauty routine at home, without having to go outside in wintertime weather, and a handful of helpful products to create an at-home spa experience.
Leave your favourite exfoliator and face scrub in the shower
Since I began doing this myself, I’ve noticed I’m using face scrubs more consistently. In the shower, I’m in the right headspace to indulge in an exfoliating facial treatment, with the steam from the shower amplifying the experience. I love the Snow Scrub Exfoliator by Isla Beauty. Made in Switzerland, it both exfoliates and regenerates. Woods Copenhagen has this amazing Deep Cleansing Scrub, with purifying and anti-aging power, and Tracie Martyn offers a lovely Enzyme Exfoliant Mask that’s as effective as a 15-minute facial.

Use a scented candle that’s dedicated to self care
The same parts of our brain that stores memories also processes smell. So fragrances have strong associative properties, with our brains connecting scents to previous experiences. Therefore, you should consider building a ritual around a specific scent that can help you fall into the appropriate mindset for self care. (While you’re at it, add dried eucalyptus to your shower and enjoy an eucalyptus steam when showering.) If you’re feeling fancy, I can highly recommend the fig-tree inspired scent from Diptyque.

Give yourself at-home manis and pedis
During the lockdown in 2020, I was forced to get rid of my shellack obsession and learn how to actually care for my own nails. Now, doing my own nails is one of my favourite self-care moments. Focusing on something that requires so much attention, in the name of self care, is quite a therapeutic act, which I’ve grown to love. I then kick back and enjoy a podcast while I let it all dry. I’ve invested in a fully equipped nail kit from Olive and June. Not only do I keep it at home, but I bring it with me on every trip! I also recommend using the Calm Balm from Mantle to care for your cuticles. When it comes to pedis, I started doing sheet masks for my feet, as well as using dedicated foot creams, like this overnight one. I have also been loving the Scholl sheet masks for your feet.

Establish a nighttime beauty ritual
Ever since I became a mother, I’ve really valued my nighttime beauty ritual. It’s kind of my go-to moment for self-care because I have the time to be alone with myself. I also actively seek out overnight rituals that will work while I sleep. One product I can’t live without — though admittedly I might be biased — is the Aceite de Moska scalp ritual from my own brand, Ceremonia. Woods Copenhagen’s lip repair treatment cream is another must-have, not to mention Mantle’s dreamy overnight Dream Mask. I love using these products together, and will then wake up to plumed glowy skin, shiny smooth hair and moisturised and healthy looking lips.
Must have for a night-time beauty ritual
Build a bedtime bath ritual
There’s no better way to unwind from a work-from-home day than by tapping a hot bath, adding bath salts, and reading a book from inside the hearth. You can use that time in the bath to also let a face mask and hair mask soak in. Björk and Berries has both calming bath salts and a purifying, hydrating body scrub that are outstanding. For a mask you’ll do no better than Tata Harper’s Clarifying Mask, which is just wonderful at restoring skin balance. Finally, clean your skin smartly with Loewe’s scented Oregano solid soap, infused with shea butter to nourish, moisturise and soothe the skin.
