Our shopping senses are going 'grey' wire over New Balance latest 740 sneakers. The October drop left us green with envy (those verdant details!), and now the latest steely styles are climbing straight to the top of our holiday wish lists. Here’s everything you need to know
Since the term 'Dad Sneaker' emerged in the mid-2010s, footwear fashion has leaned heavily into nostalgia, bringing vintage styles back into the spotlight. Just look at Adidas’ soccer-inspired Sambas or Nike’s revival of the 1990s courtside classic, the Air Tech Challenge 2. But, despite a slew of reintroduced shoes making it into our weekly rotation, no other brand has been as integral to the retro renovation of our sneaker shelves as New Balance.
The latest re-introduced style by the American footwear fiend is the cult-favourite classic 740 running shoe. The model first garnered favour when it was released in the 2000s, becoming known for its exceptional pavement-pounding capabilities. “The 740 is not just a reinterpretation; it’s a rediscovery of what made the original so special," says Brian Lynn, global vice president of lifestyle at New Balance. "We've preserved the essence of the 740, ensuring that the reissued model delivers the same level of comfort that runners loved, now in a design that fits seamlessly into modern wardrobes.”

The style was reissued in October of this year, but before it hit the stores, we got a sneak peak of the first drop at Copenhagen Fashion Week, when the Nordic's style savvy set gathered in the Danish capital to celebrate the re-released green-striped sneaker. Next came an aquatic iteration, leaving many feeling blue when the sell-out style flew off the shelves.
Now, the third drop of the 740 – with its open knit mesh upper, segmented midsole, and a streamlined silhouette – is store-bound. Just in time for Christmas, the sought-after style is dressed up in grey scale, spanning the darkest charcoal to a light dove grey. Perfect for slugging across sleet-covered streets.
