Trenchcoats turned handbags and ludicrously large shoes – this was Balenciaga’s 2025 Resort show in Shanghai
Feasting on steamed Shanghainese confectionary, attendees at Balenciaga’s Sprign 2025 runway show in the neon city were treated to designs that spoke volumes. Literally.
Super-elongated outerwear kicked off the show, replicating the sky-grazing highrises that painted the background of the catwalk in light. Knee-skimming shirts were paired with ballooning denim trousers, and there was neary a look that lacked the brand’s emblematic strong shoulder.
As the show progressed, the accessories also took on monumental proportions. Inspired by the verticality of Shanghai’s Pudong Skyscraper, dizzingly high platform boots and sneakers – featuring soles stacked on soles – have become an especially hot topic in the digital fashion forums. Balenciaga-branded bags, slung casually over the shoulder, dwarfed the models while trenchcoats-turned-totes skimmed the runway.
Towards the end of the display Demna Gvasali, introduced an array of eye-catching evening wear: 80s-reminiscnet frocks of metallic fabric wrapped around the models, a blooming blight blur dress in a floral print a blown-up bow and a stand-up collar as its main features, and hip-centric sleeveless dresses in black and white. The final act featured a feather-esque ballgown made from deca-deold pink plastic bags.
