With an eclectic mix of maxi silhouettes and sharp tailoring, we find ourselves in Florence with By Malene Birger this Copenhagen Fashion Week
By Malene Birger is a brand of opposites. On one hand, the brand embraces a non-conformist nature of eclectic material mixes and swathing silhouettes. One the other, a contemplative curated refinement in its sleek lines and Scandinavian sensibility. For AW22, the brand has brought this juxtaposition to a head, building a collection full of contradictions. High-octane bohemia clashes with elements of tactile textures and thoughtful combinations.
“I started sketching this collection after a trip to Florence,” creative director Maja Dixdotter says. “Surrounded by the golden and sandy tones of the city’s architecture and buildings, I was really inspired by the way these women dress.” The maximalist approach to dressing in Italy opposed the minimalism in Scandinavian style became a core contrast for the season. Exaggerated faux fur coats played with sharp tailoring. Chunky gold rings settled in with fluffy bags.
Texture was key in conveying the mood for the season. On Dixdotter’s mood board was an eclectic gathering of fluffy fabrics and chunky wool mixed with some light yellow leather. “I was also drawn to some shiny scalloped-edge ceramics,” she says.
