For spring/summer 2025, Rotate cast its gaze back to the roaring 20s for a sequin and fringe-heavy collection that was totally good times
By now we can agree that the so-called roaring twenties (redux) have been a bit of a flop. But if there’s one brand that’s nevertheless embodied the spirit of the freewheeling, good times era that never was, it’s Rotate. Fittingly, for spring/summer '25 designers Thora Valdimars and Jeanette Madsen cast their gaze back to the original party girl period to create a collection Gatsby himself would approve of. “We’ve had so many years of things being really hard for so many people, and we’re still in that period,” says Valdimars. “It would be so nice to see something uplifting and escape everything for one night.”
Taking place at the stunning Royal Library’s Garden, the show, which closed down Copenhagen Fashion Week, certainly offered an escape. Madsen notes that many of the references were culled from dream-like sequences in film – a notion mirrored in the somewhat surreal exuberance of the evening.
As for the clothes, this is hardly 1920s pastiche, but rather a modern application of the sequins, ruffles and fringes that defined the era – a similar approach to the 1950s-inspired collection presented last season. Slim slips cascade into floor-sweeping, asymmetric ruffles. Subtly sexy mesh body-hugging mesh dresses – a material introduced last season – are adorned with art deco sequinned florals. The palette is unmistakably spring – blush pinks and buttery yellows. “I think it’s very optimistic,” says Madsen, noting that the offering, though rooted in the 20s, also carries an of-the-moment boho touch. No-fuss separates – a mini skirt here, a relaxed knit there, plenty of denim – bring that certain sense of Danish ease.
But the real showstoppers are the fringe dresses, which swept the pebble path as the models made their way around the massive fountain. Perfect for dancing the night away at the very Rotate after party.
