The Royal Danish Academy – SS24

By Linnéa Pesonen

The Master’s students from the acclaimed Danish university presented their graduate collections at Copenhagen Fashion Week

Showcasing your graduate collection at Copenhagen Fashion Week is a pretty cool way to make your entrance into the fashion world, and the Master’s students at the revered Royal Danish Academy got to experience just that. Set in the grand sports hall of Idrætshuset, with its vaulted ceilings, arched windows, and walls draped in raven fabric, the 14 budding designers presented their final line-ups to an electrifying soundtrack. Each collection reflected the knowledge, techniques, and creative vision they have garnered and fine-tuned over their studies, offering a glimpse into what the future of fashion might look like.

Mai Sakamoto’s ‘Lovebomb’ transformed deadstock military uniforms into vibrant, bold garments, offering a powerful commentary on today’s world while embodying hope and healing for the future. Sarah Blicher Bek explored the juxtaposition between hard and soft through emotional phenomenology, resulting in fluid silhouettes and intricate ruching. Meanwhile, Viktor Kring tapped into pop culture, high fashion, and his own creative community to dream up his leather-heavy, edgy line-up ‘Scandalnavia’. Asger Beyer took a nostalgic turn with his dreamy, escapist collection that reconnects with our inner child through wardrobe choices inspired by the whimsical world of children’s dress-up games and the enchanting tales of the Brothers Grimm and H.C. Andersen.

All in all, the Royal Danish Academy can take pride in this year’s graduating talent, and it will be thrilling to see where these designers venture next.
