Yes, 1990s Jude Law should be on your mood board for next summer – at least if you plan on wearing The Garment's fashion ode to The Talented Mr Ripley's halcyon aesthetic
For The Garment’s spring/summer '25 collection, movies continue to inspire creative director Charlotte Eskildsen. Last season, Eskildsen tapped into the 1980s thriller American Gigolo for inspiration. “This season, I wanted a summer version of American Gigolo, and I also looked at The Talented Mr Ripley,” the designer says.
With a perennial fondness for merging masculinity and femininity, Eskildsen translated her cinematic references and the halcyon aesthetics of the Mediterranean into a lineup of effortless looks. “I especially looked at the men [in The Talented Mr Ripley] sitting in this square drinking an espresso and when they went sailing.” Naturally, Eskildsen had to include blazers, white trousers and the “much-needed polo” into her spring/summer mix.
Sourcing most of her inspiration in the treasure troves of French antique markets close to her second home, Eskildsen began her design process by diving into old pieces of laces, vintage fabrics, and old aprons. “I love to have this hybrid between the masculine suit and a lacy apron,” Eskildsen says, speaking of the scallop-edged and lace-trimmed cotton pieces that populate the spring/summer 2025 collection.
Not one for bright colours, Eskildsen explored her Pantones through chiffon this season. “It allowed me to use these dreamy blue shades without it feeling overpowered,” the designer explains. The fabric, found in a sheer suit, a tiered skirt and a flowy maxi dress, came styled with The Garment’s masterful muted shades: taupe, dove grey and bone white. The “whipped cream and coffee tones”, as Eskildsen describes it. The Talented Mr Ripley of it all could also be found in the 1990s silhouettes: The spaghetti straps, fit-and-flare pants, and mini skirts layered over matching loose-fit tailored trousers.
