Spotted on the streets of the Danish capital during Copenhagen Fashion Week, the well-clad show-goers seemed to gravitate towards one accessory in particular: the canary-lensed sunglasses

Murky or sunny, the street stylers – and the fashion-forward visitors – of Copenhagen know the cardinal trick to swiftly level up a look: a pair of statement sunglasses. At the most recent autumn/winter ‘25 edition of Copenhagen Fashion Week, there was plenty of shaded action, regardless of the grey skies and drizzle that dominated some of the days. And among all the suave sunglass-forward get-ups the street stylers served up, one clear trend stood out: the yellow-lensed shades.
Exuding a retro feel, amber-tinted glasses first gained traction in the 1970s, ushered in by the era’s vibrant and free-spirited, boho-hippie style. Often rendered in super-sized aviator (think Johnny Depp in Fear and Loathing), round or square shapes, these groovy glasses were donned by everyone from John Lennon to Elton John. Fast forward to the 1990s and early 2000s, and coloured lenses – yellow included – were all the rage again, thanks to sartorially savvy stars like Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey and the Olsen twins who spiced up their slick ‘fits with a pair.

More recently, when thinking about canary-hued sunglasses, one designer and brand springs to mind: Alessandro Michele’s Gucci. Specifically, his spring/summer ‘16 menswear and Resort ‘17 collections, which saw an array of vintage-inspired yellow-lensed shades sent down the runway. This, of course, ignited a resurrection of the trend off the catwalk, too (Bella Hadid, we’re looking at you).
While Gucci teamed yellow-tinged sunglasses with whimsical embroidered suits, textured slim-cut trench coats and punchy patterned frocks, our style mavens in the Danish capital put their own spin on the soon-to-be cool-kid staple. On the cobblestone streets of Copenhagen, yellow-coloured shades were worn with preppy shirt-and-tie combos (another trend that emerged from AW25 CPHFW street style), billowing A-line skirts, edgy leather jackets and funky faux fur coats. But really, when life gives you lemon-lensed sunglasses, the options for crafting your proverbial outfit lemonade are endless – this style works with virtually any ensemble, as a splash of colour, or part of an eclectic get-up.

And who knows? Maybe the CPHFW show-goers were looking to inject a few rays of (artificial) sunshine into the bleak Nordic winter, or the world simply looks happier through yellow lenses – which, surely, it must.
