Ageing gracefully like denim and leather: How to find timeless vintage in Stockholm

In the world of vintage, leather and denim (Scandinavia's favourite materials) reign supreme. In the words of model Hanna Juzon, these are the pieces that "become even more beautiful, more alive, and more valuable." Here, Juzon documents her journey through some of Stockholm's best vintage treasure troves – as photographed by her husband Pontus Björkman – to find the pieces that will age gracefully

The magnitude of vintage in today's world – widely available and quick to consume – has seen second-hand become an additional engine in the world of consumerism.

Of course, the vintage trade continues to offer significant advantages, particularly in terms of its lower environmental impact, and more ethical labor and production processes. However, as I scroll through endless vintage pieces on apps and online platforms, I often catch myself losing sight of the key reasons for choosing pre-owned garments: the intention behind the purchase and its true value. Thoughtful buying means resisting the urge to buy impulsively, choosing pieces with purpose rather than giving in to momentary desire to possess.

The true value of vintage pieces lies in their craftsmanship, labels, and materials. Leather and denim, in particular, outshine their brand-new counterparts. These timeless materials only improve with age, becoming even more beautiful, more alive, and valuable, as they break in and develop a unique patina.

First, leather. Modern fashion houses have made impressive strides in reducing the toxicity and cruelty linked to leather sourcing and production. These improvements include cutting water waste, creatively using upcycled textiles, adopting tanning processes that eliminate harmful chemicals, and purchasing leather as a co-product or waste. However, controlling these practices remains challenging, as much of the leather comes from developing countries where animal welfare laws are either non-existent or poorly enforced. As a result, the most ethical choice – both morally and aesthetically – is to invest in leather pieces with a history, items that have already lived a life before us.

Denim, on the other hand, is unmatched in its ability to shape modern city silhouettes. It mirrors the energy a person carries – a true symbol of times. Worn-in denim not only fits but also forms to our bodies, becoming a living imprint of our experiences. Like people, the more time denim spends with us, the more it develops its own unique story and character. As the fabric breathes and patinas, it evolves into a charismatic hero piece, a true wardrobe staple that grows alongside us.

We have embarked on a hunt through Stockholm to seek these ultimate buys that become better with time and ultimately grow old with us.

Broadway & Sons is an overwhelmingly inspiring destination for denim-lovers, carrying mainly denim – and arguably the very best denim. With patience, you can uncover true gems: Big E Levi’s, Blue Bell Wranglers, and an endless selection of timeless, ultra-flattering classics. We hunted down a rugged pair of Levi’s 501s, trying on five different fits before landing on one that draped just right, effortlessly enhancing the silhouette. The frayed pockets added a perfectly worn-in detail, making them feel like an instant favourite. We cinched the waist with a supple brown belt and paired it with a rare find – a broken twill Wrangler jacket lined with soft pile. Its aging weave had created a depth of colour unique to that technique, giving it an authentic character that can’t be replicated. True vintage, with true value.

Somehow, archive stores still seem to be overlooked by fashion lovers. We visited Our Legacy Workshop, where not only were the staff incredibly welcoming, but the selection of contemporary and striking archive pieces made it nearly impossible to choose "the one".

We were drawn to a burgundy leather mini skirt and a biker vest, but what truly captivated me was the skirt. As I tried it on, Pontus created a character – a girl that I wish I was – someone who shows off a tiny bit, keeps a playful spirit, and never wants to hide. The look came together with a poised, layered grey jacket contrasted with edgy chaps adorned with metal beads. The outfit is a perfect blend of versatility, complexity, and effortless ease.

Our vintage tour could not omit the legendary Acne Archive, which not only carries vintage collections but also runway pieces and samples that never went into production. The store houses a staggering amount of powerful pieces that will age beautifully while remaining effortlessly cool – something Acne Studios excels at.

We were both immediately drawn to a denim moto-style jacket hanging in the back of the store, a piece with unique energy that serves as an excellent alternative to the conventional classic denim jacket. For the purpose of this vintage exploration, we accentuated the silhouette even further by adding rough and refined snake-pattern leather mules and statement studded jeans. Sitting down in the dressing room, I was surprised to find that the metal embellishments didn't bother me (I like that they look hardcore but are gentle). The picture captures me mid-moment noticing a friend that we bumped into.

In recent years, vintage shopping has evolved into a powerful form of self-expression, particularly among young people. With a simple click, they have been able to tap into the history of fashion, with the ability to instantly shape their own personal narrative. STHLM Grön embodies this enlightened spirit of youth.

We were impressed by the store's careful selection of versatile pieces that evoke distinct characters. It felt like a refreshing departure from the (at times, constant) repetition we experience on the streets. This space gave us a unique feeling, challenging our perceptions, inviting us to embrace new silhouettes. We were charmed by the unique look of some futuristic white leather boots, with an organically shaped metal plate detail at the toe. We also grabbed an old warm jacket that exaggerated my figure and transformed me into a playful, confident girl who doesn’t conform to any traditional street style rules.

Lastly, I revisited some meaningful pieces that have stood the test of time, reinforcing our belief that vintage denim and leather only improve with age and are worth investing in. The final photo was taken at home, where I’m wearing cobalt suede Bally mules I discovered in a London vintage store on Brick Lane as a student. The vibrant electric blue still gives me a thrill. To emphasize the generational beauty of pre-loved fashion, I paired them with my mother’s suede chocolate Loewe coat and a handmade, raw denim pair of Acne Action Jeans that have nearly 30 years of history. I’m wrapped in stories that aren’t just my own, continuing their legacy and learning how to shop more consciously.

We would like to extend a big thank you to Ophelia and Jackson from Our Legacy Workshop, Alice from Acne Archive, Angelica from STHLM Grön and Ayline from Broadway & Sons. Their knowledge and kindness were rare and invaluable. When shopping, we encourage you to take the time to understand the origins and composition of garments and never hesitate to ask for help if you're unsure.
