Designer Gustaf Westman’s quirky guide to New York City

By Vogue Scandinavia

On the occasion of his NYC pop-up, which opens tomorrow at 25 Fillmore Place in South Williamsburg, Swedish designer Gustaf Westman offers his characteristically quirky guide to the city

Best known for his chunky, vibrant homewares, Swedish designer Gustaf Westman is the sort of guy who likes a dimly-lit bar and a quirky city activity. From tomorrow through Sunday October 3rd, Westman brings his singular design language to New York by way of a pop-up at 25 Fillmore Place in South Williamsburg (his second stateside pop-up) and whilst taking breaks from installing the space, he explored the city in a way that is unmistakably Gustaf Westman.

The last place on Westman’s hit-list, of course, is the pop-up itself. Dubbed Gustaf Westman in New York, the installation presents some of Westman’s greatest hits – Chunky Cups included, natch – and new favourites like the Chunky Wine Glass (currently sold out) in a museum-like setting, complete with guided tours. Also on offer are brand new, limited pieces, like a handmade ceramic Chunky Jug – perfect for drinking glögg over the holidays.

Without further ado, Westman’s totally on-point guide to New York City.

1. Go for a run

These are my best running routes:

  • Back and forth over the Williamsburg Bridge - this is best in the morning
  • Washington Square Park is great for a short jog
  • Around Manhattan by the water (see the map below)

2. Play cards in Times Square

How to make your life feel more like a movie: gather all your friends around a small red table in the heart of Times Square and play with a deck of cards.

3. Bar-hopping and clubbing

These are three of my favourite bars in NYC:

4. Sketch in a park

My top 3 NYC parks to sketch in are:

  • Elizabeth Street Garden
  • Washington Square Park
  • The Battery

5. Work at The Standard

I like to work at The Standard East Village's restaurant because they let me bring my own plates, cups and glasses.

6. Eat donuts at COPS

My friend Peter recommended that I go to COPS for donuts, and it was delicious. Everyone should go there.

7. Have a pop-up

I like having a pop-up in New York on October 10th-13th at 25 Fillmore Place.
