Dior debuts its new book with a distinctly Swedish direction

By Eleanor Kittle

The French fashion house unveils it's latest book with Swedish artist Mats Gustafson, giving Dior devotee's a new perspective on their favourite looks

“A sketch must suggest both attack and allure, it must already suggest a living line; it must be redolent with movement.” Christian Dior’s words resonate deeply as the French luxury house unveils Volume II of Dior, illustrated by Swedish artist Mats Gustafson.

In his dazzling, incisive, and poetic style, Gustafson presents this second instalment, capturing the silhouettes crafted by Dior’s creative director, Maria Grazia Chiuri. Since 2012, Gustafson has meticulously sketched the house’s collections, both past and present, driven by “a desire to dissociate himself from context, decorative elements, and ornamentation in favour of an absolute quest for a garment’s truth.”

Gustafson’s unique artistry captures the essence of Dior’s drape, illustrating how fabric envelops and enhances the body. As he so aptly puts it, "A dress only becomes interesting when it's worn." Within this anthology, readers can immerse themselves in Gustafson's exploration of texture, surface, and textile, seeing iconic looks anew—including the flirty Miss Dior dress, crafted especially for muse Natalie Portman.

Just in time for the holiday season, this collection arrives in bookstores on 5 November 2024, making Gustafson's work the perfect gift for the fashion fanatic in your life.
