Stella McCartney’s Falabella tote just turned 15, but its impact on fashion – and the environment – is timeless
The Stella McCartney flagship store in New York City’s Soho neighbourhood was buzzing over the weekend as fashion darlings and industry trailblazers gathered for a ‘Stellabration’, toasting 15 years of its beloved Falabella tote. Ever since 52-year-old Stella McCartney established her eponymous luxury brand in 2001, a bold mission has been maintained: to never use leathers, furs, skins, or feathers. In pursuit of this sustainable goal, the luxury house has set new standards in the industry: the Falabella tote being a perfect case in point.

The bag is entirely vegan, and is primarily made with plant-based materials. The lining of each tote is made from ocean plastic, and the chain handles are diamond-cut from recycled brass and recyclable aluminium. An equal amount of care goes into the craft of each bag, as Italian artisans construct the totes by hand, spending hours lacing the pieces together with organic cotton twine. This focus on material and craftsmanship pays off, and the style’s popularity has only increased with stars from Beyonce to Kate Moss sporting the Falabella.
Now, on the 15th anniversary of its release, Stella McCartney has unveiled four new iterations of the Falabella tote. With options ranging from boho cinnamon fringe to glam cracked silver, there is truly an option for everyone, and buyers can know they are investing not only in an it-bag, but also in a sustainable future.
