Winter wedding season will soon be upon us, with many a bride contemplating the merits of barely-there base paired with softly undone waves versus a more structured bun and a pretty yet polished makeup look.
Frida Gustavsson is perhaps the best advert for the latter. For her recent nuptials, the Swedish actress and model opted for hair scraped back into a bun adorned with a flowing veil and pearls. Her fresh-faced glow only complemented the simple architectural feel of her shoulder-skimming dress.
“Frida told me she wanted something natural and fresh for her big day,” says Kajsa Svanberg, who created Gustavsson’s wedding makeup. “We did a makeup test a few days before to try different colours and looks. We then set aside another day to play and experiment so that everything would run smoothly on the actual wedding day itself.”
Gustavsson is such a natural beauty that there was no need to overcomplicate her wedding look. From how Svanberg applied Gustavsson’s dewy base, to the technique she used to create a warm flush, here the accomplished makeup artist shares exactly how she created the perfect Scandinavian wedding day look.
Aced base
“Frida has beautiful skin so no heavy coverage was needed. I applied Westman Atelier Vital Skincare Complexion Drops in Atelier IV sparingly over her face using a moist sponge. A little Milk Makeup Flex Concealer in Light Sand, applied with a small brush under the eyes and around the nose, evened out her tone. A light dusting of Chanel Poudre Universelle Libre No 12 brushed under her eyes and over the T-zone took down shine and set everything in place.”

Flushed blush
“To create a warm, sun-kissed glow, I mixed a rosy cream blusher with a cream bronzer (RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek in Illusive and RMS Beauty Master Radiance Base in Deep in Radiance). As Frida’s hair was pulled away from her face, I swept the colour over her cheeks and around the hairline and temples.”
Light-reflecting sheen
"Westman Atelier Superloaded Tinted Highlight in Peau de Peche creates a natural-looking glow so I swept a little onto Frida’s cheekbones and temples. As her dress was low-cut, I also dabbed the golden Westman Atelier Lit Up Highlighter Stick in Nectar onto her shoulders and collarbone.”

Softly defined eyes
“I wanted the eyes to have a soft feel so I worked the Byredo Colour Stick in Great Sands over her lids as it’s an almost see-through warm shade with
small golden flecks to add shine and an almost glossy feel. Likewise, I chose a brown waterproof eyeliner for a more natural feel (Surratt Auto-Graphique Eyeliner in 2 Brun Riche) and applied it close to the lash line. For the finishing touch, I curled Frida’s lashes and applied the Surratt Releveé Mascara in Noir.”
Don’t forget your brows
“I used Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Taupe to fill in Frida’s brows before brushing them in place with Brow Freeze. Brows frame a face so it’s important not to skip this step."
Rosy lips
“Frida actually used a Nars Orgasm Lip Mask to prep her lips in the morning before using her own Chanel Rouge Coco Baume in Natural Charm. We opted for a coloured lip balm with a natural rosy tone rather than lipstick as it was easy for Frida to reapply it during the day.”
