Editor in chief Martina Bonnier shares her front-row musings on Gucci's 'return to London' for Resort '25
Gucci's roots in London run deeper than many realise. During the turn of the 19th century, a young Guccio Gucci was hired to man the newly installed electric lift at The Savoy Hotel. For the seven minutes it would take the contraption to reach the top floor, Gucci no doubt observed and soaked up the habits, style and, most importantly, the luggage of the elite. He returned to Florence in 1921, began his eponymous leather-goods house, and the rest is fashion history.
Last night, within the walls of the Tate Modern gallery, creative director Sabato De Sarno paid tribute to this legacy with a Resort '25 collection titled ‘We'll always have London’. Woven with reflections on the heritage of Gucci and the house's design codes, the collection was woven with personal threads, too. “I owe a lot to this city, it has welcomed and listened to me,” De Sarno says.
Characterised with a familiar preppy and eclectic tone, and peppered with brand insignia, there was a dose of newness throughout: from the supersized 'Jackie' bag, to razor-sharp pleating and easy layering. Read on for a closer look at six of my highlights from the Resort '25 line up.
Lumber jacket & long pleats
“There's something so effortless about this pairing: the sporty leather lumber jacket over the long pleated chiffon skirt. A stand-out look.”
Vacation-ready pleated organza
“Plucked from Sabato De Sarno's garden vision, this organza pleated dress is an absolute dream. Paired with flats and no accessories, it’s the perfect hoilday dress.”
The oversized 'Jackie'
“A new introduction on the runway, this oversized ‘Jackie’ bag will be the go-to bag in my, and many other fashionistas', collection.”
The modern preppy twist
“The proper office-worthy pussy-bow blouse, teamed with a tailored jacket and mini shorts set, and finished with a pearls, signature striped socks and loafers. It's the modern twist on preppy that we love.”
Easy Resort edge
“Long baggy jeans, layered with a fringe skirt, an oversized white skirt and ballerina flats. It doesn't get more easy Resort cool than that. What's not to love!”
An ode to London
“Inspired by the support that De Sarno, and the Gucci family of the past, has always found in London – this was a major look for the Resort '25 collections and one of my favourites.”
