The 7 haircuts that will be trending in 2025, according to industry experts

By Josefin Forsberg

As we're heading into a new year, it comes as no surprise that we're itching for change. The easiest way to achieve this? A new haircut. Here, Vogue Scandinavia taps some of the industry's leading hairdressers (including Elsa Hosk's preferred stylist) to find out which trendy haircuts we should try in 2025

The “Bieber” bob (A.k.a the jawline or boy bob)

While bobs continue their reign as the ultimate haircut, one specific iteration is shaping up to be the cut above the rest: the jawline-skimming bob. Also known as the “micro bob” or “boy bob,” this sleek style owes much of its meteoric rise to Hailey Bieber — hence its affectionate nickname, the “Bieber bob.”

“It takes the classic bob trend to new heights with an even shorter, more dramatic length,” says Oslo-based hairstylist Dominika Langbråten, who cuts Norwegian tastemakers like Tsutsumi Hoang and Marianne Theodorsen at the buzzy Gevir salon. Celebrity hairstylist Panos Papandrianos, known for Elsa Hosk’s enviable cuts, agrees that the sharp, structured bob is a standout trend for 2025. “It creates a bold, sculpted look that is best for angular or oval face shapes,” he says, adding, “Avoid it if you prefer a softer look.”

Swedish stylist Robert Preston (owner of the buzzy eponymous Stockholm salon Preston Hair on Narvavägen) echoes this sentiment, describing the sleek jawline bob as a perfect pairing for winter’s structured fashion — think scarves and tailored coats. “If you want to create a more angular effect for a longer or oval face shape, or highlight strong features like a heart-shaped face, this cut will accentuate your cheekbones beautifully,” he says. Preston also suggests adding a fringe to frame your face and draw attention to your eyes.

As for styling, Langbråten recommends blow-drying the hair with a barrel brush for lift and sleekness. “For a polished finish, tuck the hair behind one ear or leave one side loose for a bit of face-framing drama,” she adds.

Long lived-in layers and fluffy ‘70s curls

If there’s one thing 2025 is teaching us, it’s that carefree cool is back in full swing – especially when it comes to long hair. Whether you’re after soft layers that channel Stevie Nicks or fluffy, disco-ready curls, retro cuts have cropped up on our expert’s mood boards for the year ahead.

Preston highlights the versatility of long, lived-in layers, calling them “relaxed yet modern” with a distinct nod to 1970s rock icons like Debbie Harry. “These layers add gorgeous dimension and movement to any hair type, whether straight or wavy,” he explains. Best of all? The look is practically maintenance-free. “The layers grow out naturally, looking even better over time, making it perfect for those who can’t always fit in regular salon visits,” he says. Copenhagen Fashion Week veteran Cim Mahony agrees, pointing to mid-length styles with subtle, invisible layers and loose waves for a more rock’n’roll edge. “It’s a bit more Patti Smith – cool with jeans and a T-shirt, but still chic when dressing up,” he says.

If volume is your calling card, however, it’s time to channel disco glamour with fluffy, oversized curls. “Big, '70s-inspired curls are ideal for curly or textured hair,” says Papandrianos, who recommends adding layers to amp up the volume. His advice for pin-straight strands or very fine hair? Maybe park this one on the mood board.

Heavy, face-framing curtain bangs

Call it the Carpenter effect, or perhaps a testament to the perennial popularity of Birkin bangs, but one thing is certain: a heavy, face-framing curtain fringe remains a key trend for 2025.

Celebrity hairstylist Panos Papandrianos highlights heavy curtain bangs as central to the ongoing fringe renaissance. “Bangs of all styles—blunt, curtain, soft, or heavy—remain a popular choice for 2025,” he explains, adding that their versatility lies in their ability to frame the face beautifully while complementing your features. For a softer, more romantic vibe, Papandrianos recommends pairing them with the Birkin Bob, a shoulder-skimming style inspired by Jane Birkin herself. “Ask for soft layers with curtain bangs,” he says, noting that the style works well with most face shapes.

Equal parts timeless and transformative, Preston notes how these bangs can be tailored to suit nearly every hair type and face shape. “Fringes remain a hot trend in 2025, whether it’s curtain bangs, a Birkin fringe, or a 'mouse cut' (popularised by Taylor Swift), fringes are taking centre stage,” he says — no wonder they’re having such a moment. His practical advice? “Use dry shampoo on your fringe to keep it fresh and avoid any greasiness.”

The 1990s supermodel bob

The supermodel bob of the 1990s is stepping back into the spotlight for 2025 – Think high-octane hair flips, glossy volume, and the kind of bounce that deserves its own runway walk.

Banking on soft, textured layers that create movement, this bob leans slightly heavier than its French or Italian counterparts, making it ideal for those with thick hair according to Preston. These layers are also the key to achieving a balance between structure and ease – what Papandrianos calls “undone yet chic”.

For those whose hair refuses to hold volume, fret not. “If your hair lacks the volume to channel your inner Cindy Crawford, it’s time to invest in some volumising hair products,” Preston advises. A touch of mousse or a spritz of texture spray will work wonders to recreate that blow-dried, bouncy finish.

When heading to the salon, Papandrianos suggests asking for “soft layers with movement,” customised to your hair type. Then, to make the most of the look, pair it with a blowout that delivers shine, bounce, and just a hint of '90s supermodel swagger.

Embracing natural texture

Natural texture might not be “new,” but in 2025 we’re going to be unapologetic about it. Whether your hair is curly, coiled, or just beautifully unruly, this trend is about amplifying what’s already there – and celebrating every inch of it. “This isn’t about making afro or natural hair a trend,” says Preston, “but about embracing what’s authentic and feeling liberated to be yourself, whether that means curls, braids, or locs.”

For tighter textures, Mahony looks to icons like Lauryn Hill in the '90s. His advice? Don’t be afraid to lean into bold, twisted textures that feel both nostalgic and fresh. “Tight and textured hair has so much character,” he says, adding that scalp care is equally vital. “Healthy hair and scalp are the buzzwords of 2025. Like your skincare routine, when you give attention to your hair and scalp, you get results.”

So forget the endless hours spent styling and over-polished looks; this year we’re working with our hair, not against it.

The “skinny fringe”

Light, airy, and just a little edgy, the skinny fringe is the softer take on bangs for 2025. Delicate and wispy, it adds dimension without overwhelming your features “A skinny fringe creates a soft, edgy look while face-framing layers enhance movement and draw attention to your facial structure,” explains Preston. Langbråten agrees, calling this fringe style “whimsical and interesting,” especially for those with oval or heart-shaped faces. “It highlights lovely cheekbones and softens your overall appearance,” she adds.

Whether you’re pairing it with long, flowing locks or a sharply tailored bob, the skinny fringe is the perfect choice for those who want to dip into the trend without diving headfirst. That said, it’s not for everyone. “If your hair is very fine, a thin fringe might look limp,” Langbråten advises, suggesting thicker hair types for the best results.

When it comes to communicating with your stylist, Preston suggests being clear about your vision: “Ask for a fine fringe with a light, airy feel that blends well with your overall hairstyle.” Langbråten also recommends sharing reference photos and specifying whether you want it paired with choppy layers or longer face-framing pieces.

Alternative cuts

For those ready to stray from the conventional, 2025 offers a lineup of adventurous, avant-garde styles that balance creativity with practicality. Spying into his crystal ball of hair trends, Preston taps two cuts in particular as a chop above the rest: The ‘Bixie’ wolf cut and the 'Jellyfish' cut.

A rebellious mix of the bixie (a bob-meets-pixie hybrid) and the wolf cut, the aforementioned ‘bixie’ wolf cut is all about movement and attitude. “It blends relaxed coolness with plenty of spontaneity,” says Preston, noting that it carries a touch of that unbothered Södermalm vibe. It is also surprisingly low-maintenance. “It gets better as it grows out, so no need for constant salon visits,” Preston adds. If you’re after a style that feels dynamic and full of life without the hours of styling, this one delivers.

For those torn between keeping things short or long, the jellyfish cut might just be the best of both worlds. Inspired by Japanese hime cuts and manga aesthetics, this layered style combines the structured appeal of a bob with the drama of longer, flowing sections at the back – but Preston notes that upkeep is key: “The dramatic lines require regular maintenance to stay sharp,” he shares. That said, it’s flexible enough to evolve — if you tire of the longer pieces, a quick trim transitions it into a classic bob.
