We're a few weeks into 2025, but it's never too late for a fresh start – and when it comes to decluttering your wardrobe, we've got the tips, tricks (and smart storage investments) to make it stick
Even if you don’t think you’re due for a closet clean-out, a simple refresh can work wonders. Imagine starting each day without the stress of sifting through a cluttered wardrobe. It's amazing how clear-headed and energised you’ll feel.
A ruthlessly minimalist approach is always a powerful starting point: fewer items in your possession automatically means less chaos. But if you're holding on dearly to those knitted sweaters you haven’t worn since high school, we’ve got you covered. With our expert tips and tricks, organising your closet can be a breeze – with no garment sacrifices required.
Declutter & Decide
To truly assess what you own, start by letting go of the pieces you’ve been holding onto ‘just in case’ – the ones you might wear ‘sometime in the future’ (but most likely won’t). A great first step is to completely empty your closet. Lay everything out on your bed. As overwhelming as it may seem, you’ll likely find a few items you’re ready to part with once you see them all laid out.
Next, create piles: one for keeping, one for maybes, one for selling, and one for donating. This method helps break the process into manageable steps and gives you a clearer sense of how you truly feel about each item. Once everything is in a pile, go through them again, this time with more care. You’ll often find that you’re more generous with your selling and donating piles once you see how much you’re actually keeping.
Organise
Take your time to organize the pieces you’ve decided to keep. At this stage, there’s no right or wrong way – just go with what feels best for you. We recommend considering one of these methods:
- By colour
- By style (e.g., blouses with blouses, jeans with jeans)
- By your personal favourites
Optimise your closet system
Before hanging everything back in your closet, take a moment to consider how you can optimisey our space. Being in the Nordics, we’re big fans of IKEA’s PAX wardrobe systems. When it comes to the finer details of organisation, we recommend investing in lightweight storage boxes in various sizes and choosing the right hangers. Unfortunately, metal dry-cleaner and plastic hangers won’t do the trick. Instead, opt for thin felt hangers – they’re ideal for small spaces. Felt hangers won’t leave marks on your clothes and provide the necessary grip to keep your items from slipping off."
Separate styles and seasons
To prevent your closet from overflowing, be strict about sorting your clothes by season, and pack away off-season pieces in large storage boxes. If you're lucky enough to have a basement, store them there. If you need to keep everything in your home, we recommend investing in vacuum-seal bags. These bags allow you to remove excess air, shrinking the clothes down to their minimum size.
Use the space outside of your closet
There are many creative ways to store your accessories outside of your closet, from bags and shoes to jewellery. Be smart about utilising your space – use the backs of doors for hanging items, store jewelry in standing organizers instead of drawers (saving the drawer space for items that need to be laid flat), and don’t forget about your walls for wall-mounted hooks or hangers. Invest in hangers that complement your interior style and make a statement.
