They're the angelic, curly-haired double act that have crowds doing a double-take at fashion week and their followers double-tapping their posts. As their modelling careers took off, so did the Instagram and TikTok accounts of Idunn and Sofie Vollan. Since then, the Norwegian twins have been on everyone's sartorial radar, marking their mark on the world of fashion – and by default, beauty too.

During the pair's trajectory, their style has been just as influential as their blonde ringlet curl patterns and glowing glass skins. But the journey to embracing and enhancing their curls hasn't always been easy. "We always left the house with a ponytail," the Vollans tell Vogue Scandinavia. "Growing up doing all kinds of sports with curly hair meant never leaving our hair down. Once we got to the age of 14, we started religiously bleaching our hair at home, destroying our natural curl pattern," they go on. "It wasn’t until we turned 18 and saw old pictures of our mum and aunt from the '90s that we realised how beautiful our natural hair could be."

From there, the duo started looking more into haircare and how they could start their journey back to natural hair. "We started looking into haircare and how we could start our journey back to natural hair. Going from zero hair care experience four years ago to now having our virgin curly hair and the perfect curated hair routine to accompany it has been a long journey, but we are finally here and ready to share all our secrets."

If you could only use one hair care product for the rest of your life, which one would it be?

Idunn: "I would use cream heat spray from Maria Nila simply because it's a product that not only promotes moisture and helps define my curls, but also has heat protectants. A dream product in my eyes. You could call it an all-in-one. It’s light and smells amazing. I use it for styling, refreshing the curls throughout the week, and or to tame my frizz for better curl definition."

Sofie: "The first product that popped into my head was the DAE 3-in-1 styling cream. It helps to define my curls if needed but can also be used as a styling cream to slick my hair into a bun or ponytail. It leaves the hair feeling soft and hydrated, plus it smells like tropical fruits."

What would you tell anyone who is struggling to love their curls?

Idunn: “I have been there but curls are beautiful, fun and so are you! The biggest reasons my view on my curls changed is our mom and aunt. Seeing pictures of them embracing their curls in their youth made me see how beautiful my natural hair is. Embrace what your mama gave you!”

Sofie: "Spend time learning about your hair and what products work for you. It’s not as hard to maintain a consistent routine as you would think. It might feel impossible right now, but learning about your hair is the fastest way to reach the hair goals you’re looking for. The good thing is that I can be your big sister for a moment and help you figure it out. I have been on a four-year-long hair journey. I went from bleaching my hair every other month, straightening and using heat almost every day to now having natural healthy and thicker hair once again. I didn't understand how thin my hair had gotten due to the bleach and heat before looking back at old photos. Do you want dry thinner hair that's a bit blonder or healthy thick hair? Once I stopped, took a step back and reflected on my hair goals; it was an easy decision to start my journey to natural hair."

Three steps to start your hair journey

Step 1: Stop damaging your hair, go for protective styles instead of reaching for the heat tools. Be mindful of what products you put on your hair and avoid products with lots of chemicals like parabens, sulfates and silicones.

Step 2: Find protective styles and products you like that suit your hair type.

Step 3: Stay consistent! That’s when you’re going to start seeing results.

What Nordic brand is your go-to when it comes to hair care products?

Idunn: "Maria Nila is both mine and Sofie’s favourite Nordic hair care brand. They have products for everyone and you can really feel the difference after using the products for a while. Sofie started using Maria Nila over a year ago, then she really introduced me to Maria Nila products after coming home from Brazil in March and we haven't had split ends to trim since. Our hair feels bouncy and lush. Maria Nila is also vegan, sulfate and cruelty-free and they plant trees in Nicaragua to compensate for their CO2 emissions. I can’t think of anything more to ask of a brand. On top of that the products smell so freaking good. Getting compliments on the scent of my hair? I'm not complaining."

Do you care for your hair differently depending on the season? If yes, what products do you prefer for summer and then winter?

"Yes! The winters in Scandinavia are our hair's biggest enemy. During the winter, it's harder to take care of our curls due to more frizz and dehydration from the cold, dryer air. But fear not! There are precautions that will make the winters fly by.

We need all the moisture we can get, so switch over to the most hydrating shampoo and conditioner you can get your hands on. We usually go for Moroccan oil hydrating shampoo or SNØLØS stay hydrated shampoo, another amazing Scandinavian haircare brand.

Use a hair mask after shampooing during every wash. We only wash our hair 1-2 times a week to let the hair breathe and train our scalp to not overproduce oil, making our hair greasy. We have been doing this for as long as we can remember (Our mom taught us from a young age).

Apply some leave-in lotion/cream every morning to give the hair an extra layer of protection from the cold weather. For example, Maria Nila structure repair leav- in cream.

In the summer we still give our hair a lot of moisture, but we don't need to take as much care of it compared to the winter.

Shampoo and conditioner are more flexible and our choices vary depending on wishes and needs. For example, if we have been working on set a lot with a hairstylist who’s using heat on our hair, we will go for a shampoo and conditioner that provides relief to the hair. Kerastase resistance bundle series is a good choice for the repair needed. If we’re going to any events we usually reach for volumising shampoo and conditioners from Maria Nila.

We always try letting our hair air dry and never go to sleep with wet hair! Your scalp will thank you later."

As models your skin takes a lot of damage, what products do you use to build up your skin barrier?

"We like to keep it simple. We don't use makeup if we’re not doing something special, letting our skin breathe between work. We also try to eat as clean as we can so our skin doesn't get inflamed.

Of course, we have our SOS products. It's very important to have a healthy skin barrier when your skin is introduced to so many different products at work. Therefore, we always carry a tube with cicaplast B5 from La Roche Posay."

If we would do a ‘what’s in by bag’, what three beauty products are we most likely to find?

"I never leave the house without lip liner ('Caia Bianca' or 'Caramel Cutie'). 'Costa Rica' from Mac is also good to use on your lips, as an eyeliner or on beauty marks. 'Gloss' from Rhode peptide ('Salty Tan' or 'Toast') and setting powder from Huda Beauty ('Pound Cake') for touch-ups."
