Joining the legions of cool girls who favour the Parisian brand, Swedish singer Lykke Li wore a sculptural black Balenciaga gown to this year’s Golden Globes
When it comes to the celebrities who wear Balenciaga on the red carpet, it’s as much about the woman herself as it is about the garment – and that’s not just because Demna’s gowns tend to interact with the body in distinctly sculptural ways. Balenciaga women are effortlessly cool, more concerned with aesthetic impact than simply looking pretty and undeniably powerful (Isabelle Huppert, Nicole Kidman and Michelle Yeoh come to mind). Now, another perfectly on-point Balenciaga woman has entered the chat: Lykke Li. The beloved Swedish singer opted for a sleek black Balenciaga gown for this year’s Golden Globes.
Nominated in the category of Best Original Song for “Beautiful That Way”, which appeared in the Pamela Anderson-starring film The Last Showgirl (she co-wrote with Miley Cyrus and Andrew Wyatt, frontman of Swedish band Miike Snow), Lykke was serving galactic princess. Not only would the black silk Balenciaga gown, with its asymmetric neckline and sculptural nips and seams, look right at home on a very glamorous spaceship, the singer’s slick pixie-come-mullett cut also appeared shipped from a distant future. She finished the look with a diamonds, natch.
Lykke might not have nabbed the trophy, but we are a little bit in love with this look.
