Feeling unsure of your next lacquer move? Let the runes guide your decision
Browsing nail polish shades in the salon or store can be a daunting task, considering the many options available. Are you an on-trend 'Latte'-lover or do your prefer perennial shades of blush pink? If you're feeling unsure of your next lacquer move, let the runes guide your decision.
Below, discover what shade of nail polish you should wear based on your birth rune this autumn:
Eihwaz (28th December – 13th January)
According to Runic astrology, this rune "offers you protection while you fight for your personal goals." As such, there's no better polish for people born under the Eihwaz rune than a protective base coat. Our favourite? Danish Alûstre's diamond-infused sheer ivory version which contains ethically and responsibly sourced diamond powder of 0.25 carats for optimal chip-resistant strength.
Perthro (13th January – 28th January)
Secrets, revelations and mysteries guide those born under the Perthro rune. And what polish better fits the bill than a colour-shifting one? With an inevitable surprise in store, might we suggest Layla's thermo activated polish shifting from a dark to light green based on the temperature.
Algiz (28th January – 13th February)
Another rune that gives you protection, Algiz predicts a good and happy autumn season ahead. But be aware of evil, and lean on old friends in times of need. Such as the dependable Le Vernis 155 Rouge Noir by Chanel. This perennial polish has been around for a while, and we don't predict it going away any time soon.
Sowilo (13th February – 27th February)
The Sowilo rune is closely related to our body and health. And while this serum by Dashl may not strictly fit into the polish category, it is just the TLC your tired nails require.
Teiwaz (27th February – 14th March)
For those born under the Teiwaz rune, will-power and fighting for what you want is key – with success being the only acceptable outcome. But besides being considered a victory rune, it is also a symbol of romance. As such, might we suggest a flirty shade of pink to begin your budding polish love affair?
Berkano (14th March – 30th March)
Family and a strong feminine presence rules those born under the Berkano rune. This symbol predicts family events, such as weddings and births, around the corner. Considering this, it seems there's no better polish to procure than a barely-there bridal shade.
Ehwaz (30th March – 14th April)
The Ehwaz rune relates to movement and changes. In other words: It is a symbol of travel, new jobs and new homes. For those born under this sign, it is important to trust that the changes will be for the best this autumn. Better yet, embrace them with O.P.I's travel inspired 'My Private Jet' polish.
Mannaz (14th April – 29th April)
The Mannaz run signifies teamwork, and the ultimate team player when it comes to polishes is the top coat. A supporting act that helps the colour beneath shine, it is the perfect pick for the people born under this rune.
Laguz (29th April – 14th May)
Laguz is another feminine rune, connected to our intuition and imagination. The Divine, whether sensed or not, is at the centre for people born under this sign, and London Grace's crystal inspired 'Angel Aurua' perfectly embodies this otherworldly essence.
Ingwaz (14th May – 29th May)
Ingwaz is an important rune that symbolises conclusion. If you're born under this rune, you are ready for closure and to move on in a new direction. And no shade of polish is as finite as true black.
Algiz (28th January – 13th February)
Algiz relates to uprising and constant growth. Symbolising how a new time will come, full of hope and optimism, there's no better colour to wear than a budding green reminding us that spring is just around the corner.
Othala (29th May – 14th June)
The Othala rune, connected to the beginnings of summer, represents material goods and heritage. With bounty bound to come your way, what better polish to pick than a sparkling gold shade? Our favourite is the subtle glow of Dior's 513 J'adore.
Dagaz (14th June – 29th June)
Dagaz literally translated to “day” or "dawn", but in terms of esoteric meanings it represents an awakening – a new day both literally and figuratively. And we suggest you wake up to the allure of wearing non-traditional autumn shades. Such as Essie's ode to midsummer: 'Soul-stice'.
Fehu (29th June – 14th July)
Those born under the Fehu rune seeks independence, and realises that true wealth lies in freedom. And what better way to break free than with an eye-catching nail colour. This Klein blue polish by Orly certainly fits the mould.
Uruz (14th July – 29th July)
Uruz is a rather wild rune, representing sheer creativity. Breaking any preconceived boundaries, those born under this rune would embrace their inner child with this sparkling shade by O.P.I..
Thurisaz (29th July – 13th August)
Thurisaz is ruled by Thor, the God of Thunder. So what better way to embrace your birth rune than with a thunderous silver grey?
Ansuz (13th August – 29th August)
Ansuz represents communication while the esoteric meaning correlates to the breath of life. We suggest you embrace wisdom if you're born under this rune, and heed our advice when we suggest an ethereal light blue nail polish to sport.
Raidho (29th August – 13th September)
Whether physical travel, inner travel or travel ‘through time’, if you're born under the journey rune Raidho you're always on the move. That's why you shouldn't wear a nail polish that requires much upkeep. Manucurist's sheer lacquer with a rosy glow fits the bill.
Kenaz (13th September – 28th September)
In the runic alphabet, Kenaz is the rune of knowledge and the night sky. Literally translating into “torch”, it symbolises playful enlightenment. Illuminating your way through autumn, might we suggest a speckled gold polish to represent the stars above?
Gebo (28th September – 13th October)
Gebo is the rune of balance. A balance between the feminine and masculine, between the giver and receiver. As such, we suggest you find a polish that embodies balance. And for use, no lacquer is quite a level as a true nude.
Wunjo (13th October – 28th October)
Wunjo is the rune for joy. Quite literally, those born under this rune are most often the life of the party. As such, of course they should wear a part nail polish. Our pick falls on this silver glitter set to sparkle.
Hagalaz (28th October – 13th November)
Hagalaz represents disruption and necessary chaos. For those influenced by this rune, consider this period as a time of cleansing and rebirth. As you rid yourself of old habits, paint your nails with 1944's 'Magalie', a deep cloudy gray that echoes the transformative storm you're weathering.
Nauthiz (13th November – 28th November)
Naudhiz advises caution and mindfulness. In times of challenge, your resilience is tested. To remind yourself of the fire within, use By Lyko's 'Carmine Red'. This fiery red shade is a bold symbol of the inner strength you possess and the challenges you can overcome.
Isa (28th November – 13th December)
Isa speaks of patience and stillness. While progress may be slow, it is a time for introspection and calm. Reflect the serene ice this rune represents with O.P.I.'s 'Alpine Snow', a pure, crisp white. It's a reminder to remain patient and clear-headed, even when things feel stagnant.
Jera (13th December – 28th December)
Jera embodies cycles and the concept of reaping what's sown. For those influenced by this rune, trust in the rhythms of life and know that your efforts will eventually bear fruit. To honour the cyclical nature of Jera, adorn your nails with a captivating coppery-red hue that mirrors the changing leaves and the promise of a fruitful harvest.
