Endorsed by royalty and Hollywood A-listers alike, pink is the new white when it comes to wedding dressed. We visit the archive to take notes from 18 Vogue brides who have done it best
Think wearing pink to your wedding day is a radical choice? Think again. There’s a long list of notable brides who donned the rosy hue to say 'I do'. Even royals have eschewed traditional white for the colour – in 1935, Lady Alice Christabel Montagu Douglas Scott wore a pale pink Norman Hartnell gown to her wedding, at which the future Queen Elizabeth II was a bridesmaid. And in more recent history, Beatrice Borromeo wore a gossamer mauvy-pink Valentino couture gown to her civil ceremony to wed Monaco’s Prince Pierre Casiraghi in 2015. Talk about a royal stamp of approval.
Over in Hollywood, meanwhile, pink has long been a stylish bride’s colour of choice: See the pale Valentino gown Anne Hathaway wore to her very private wedding in 2012. That same year, Jessica Biel chose a floral pink Giambattista Valli dress to marry Justin Timberlake in Puglia, Italy. And who could forget Gwen Stefani’s custom dip-dyed Pepto-Bismol pink John Galliano gown worn to marry her first husband, Gavin Rossdale, in 2002?
Over in the Vogue Weddings archive, plenty of brides have chosen the romantic colour to exchange vows or to their rehearsal dinners. Below, find a selection of some of our favourite brides who wore pink.
For her wedding in Malibu, Tiwinkle Khurana wore a blush-pink Manish Malhotra lehenga. “As soon as I tried the Manish Malhotra pink lehenga, my parents were in awe. I felt like a princess, and all the customers in the store, as well as the staff, were also in awe. That’s when I knew it was the one. I had to buy it!” says the bride.
For her London wedding, Olive Uniacke opted for a punchy pink wedding gown (inspired by a Raf Simons for Dior dress once worn by Marion Cotillard) designed and made by a London-based couturier. “I just wanted it to feel true to me,” Uniacke said of her unexpected choice. “I loved this idea that everyone would show up in bright colours, including me.”
For her rehearsal dinner in Capri, Carly Cucco wore a pink tulle-tiered gown by Carolina Herrera. She paired it with a sparkly Judith Leiber lemon clutch as a nod to the lemon tree-filled venue, Ristorante Da Paolino.
For Jamaica Walden’s elopement wedding in the Santa Ynez Valley, she wore Christopher John Rogers’s Strawberry dress. “My mother also got married in a hot-pink dress, and so my bridal look paid homage to her,” says Walden.
For her rehearsal dinner at her wedding in Montalcino, Italy, bride Gabrielle Hackman wore a silk taffeta Carolina Herrera minidress with dramatic, puffy sleeves and a long flowy train. The theme of the night, which happened to be her 30th birthday? Pretty in pink. “I’ve always loved themed parties, so we settled on ‘pretty in pink’ for Thursday’s birthday party, which made for incredible photos and a very girly vibe,” says Hackman.
For her rehearsal dinner in Jamaica, Grace Morton wore a vintage pink Chanel haute couture ensemble from 1999 purchased from Lily et Cie. She accessorised the look with a vintage white Chanel Kelly mini bag from 1994 and fresh purple orchids in her hair.
For her wedding in Florence, Verde Cordero di Montezemolo wore a dress she helped design with Rina Milano of Mezzanine. “I brought her a design I had made, and she was able to perfectly interpret what I wanted. It was crucial for me to feel like myself on our wedding day. Initially the idea was to do it white, but one day I caught a glimpse of this pink satin in her workshop and we knew that was the direction,” says Cordero di Montezemolo.
For her Manhattan wedding, Julia Cordry wore a custom Carolina Herrera gown with a swathe of pink. “We went through many different colour combinations before finally settling on ivory on the front (so that there was still a resemblance of traditional white), hot pink on the side, and then the navy train,” says Cordry, who credits the house’s creative director, Wes Gordon, for completing her vision.
For her wedding at Chelsea Old Town Hall, Harriet Hall wore a hot pink Molly Goddard dress. “I knew the second I saw it. It wasn’t a wedding gown, it was a showstopper; a cloud of fuchsia tulle with a trapeze-smock silhouette, horizontal ruffling, contemporary leg-of-mutton sleeves and an empire-line bust that fell into a sheer skirt ending at the calves,” said Hall.
