Nothing oozes effortless Scandinavian style quite like well-worn staples. But it's not quite as easy as it seems to pull it off – it takes a certain eye for detail and quality to ensure your ensemble of staple reads as sophistication, rather than overly simple.
To help us crack the code of an elegant timeless wardrobe, we've called on one of the best in the game when it comes to styling staples: London-based Norwegian Rikke Krefting. Here, Krefting lets us in some of her own hacks (which she says have become especially useful since becoming a mother) and curates a special shopping selection of key her own recommended staple investments.
Which staple pieces would you recommend on days when inspiration is lacking?
I would opt for an oversized cashmere sweater paired with a white T-shirt, denim trousers and comfortable shoes – either loafers or chic sneakers. After becoming a mother, I wear comfy shoes every day as I walk so much – so that has most definitely become a staple in my wardrobe.
Which five staples should everyone have in their wardrobes?
- The perfect coat! - We all need a chic coat
- A pair of on-point jeans, you can never go wrong with them
- Comfy cashmere jumpers, perfect for cold summer nights and winter days
- A classy watch
- Elegant and sophisticated shoes, which could be ballerina flats, loafers or sneakers
In which ways is your personal style reflected in this edit?
Since becoming a mother last year, my personal style has evolved more towards practicality. I want to be comfortable yet elegant on a daily basis, as I have my little daughter with me most of the time – either for work meetings or mum-dates.
Pre-baby, I mostly wore heels during the days. But now when I have the pram with me, I always prefer practicality. I also want to be comfortable while moving and doing things together with my daughter, and the dress up more if I go for dinners or do things without her.

Which two items in your selection feel extra special?
My pinky rings from Zuzana Spustova and my watch from my husband.
When building a timeless and long-lasting wardrobe, what are one or two things to keep in mind?
To build a perfect timeless wardrobe I think first and foremost to say that one needs to choose sophisticated and elegant pieces, rather than trendy pieces. Secondly, less is more when it comes to timeless object. Choose minimalistic elegance and opt for good quality to have the pieces last longer and be suitable for longer time. One good wool coat will serve you many more seasons than two others of less quality.
