To celebrate Royal Copenhagen’s 250th anniversary, Queen Margrethe of Denmark has collaborated with the beloved homeware brand, lending her creative touch to a limited-edition mug featuring her own illustrations
Sipping your hot beverage of choice this winter just got a (royal) upgrade. To celebrate its 250th anniversary, Royal Copenhagen, the renowned Danish homeware brand, has unveiled a collaboration with Queen Margrethe of Denmark. Known for her artistic talents across various creative media – from painting and costume design to embroidery and scenography – the beloved royal has illustrated a special, limited edition ‘Anniversary Mug’ that pays homage to Royal Copenhagen’s illustrious legacy.
Set against a crisp white thermal mug, Queen Margrethe, in collaboration with Royal Copenhagen’s porcelain painters, envisioned a motif of two sweeping fish gliding through water, beautifully rendered in soft cobalt blue brushstrokes. “The cup’s motif is inspired by a fish I painted in France many years ago,” Her Majesty explains. “I have always been fond of it, and I think the hand-painted decoration looks so lovely on the fluted porcelain.”
“It is a great honour for Royal Copenhagen that HM Queen Margrethe has accepted the invitation to mark our 250th anniversary with her creativity and passion for craftsmanship, ready to be enjoyed by many,” says Jasper Toron Nielsen, creative director of Royal Copenhagen. “We are excited that this commemorative mug marks the beginning of a very special year of celebrating our history and heritage.”
The ‘Anniversary Mug’ not only honours Royal Copenhagen’s history and this significant milestone but also highlights the artistic freedom of the porcelain painter. The best part? No two mugs are exactly alike. Thanks to the hand-painted motif, each decoration boasts subtle variations, making every piece truly unique.
The limited edition 'Anniversary Mug' is only available in the anniversary year, 2025, and sold in Royal Copenhagen’s own stores, concessions, and via royalcopenhagen.com.
