While it's the season for swathing ourselves in warming knits and heavy coats, one trend goes against the grain. Highlighted in our October-November issue, skin-bearing strappy garments have caught our attention this season.

Tie details and skimpy straps have been on the sartorial agenda before. Most notably, powerhouse brands during the early aughts like Prada and Saint Laurent brought strappy and stringy back. Repopularized today, we trace the trend back to the 1990s and early aughts, when the likes of Lucy Liu's walked the red carpet in a cutout, wrap-waist jumpsuit from the Hollywood premiere of Play it to the Bone.

Imbuing a touch of sensuality to any closet, straps can appear in several types of garments, whether in tops, skirts or pants, multiplying the possibilities of harmonisation. Vogue Scandinavia, however, find that the top takes centre stage in our styling this season.

The garment has come to define our social media feeds and is quickly trickling onto global runways. Internationally, the likes of Nensi Dojaka and Jacquemus have come to define the trend, while in the Nordics, Danish Saks Potts led the charge on the SS22 runways.

The mere thought of sporting skin-baring pieces and adding mid-riff into your day-to-day rotation would make the bravest dresser incredulous, but when layered or styled with essentials you already own, the trend is seen likely you in a different light. Stretched, strung, and wrapped across our bodies – we propose you pair the minimal coverage with a maxi silhouette in a casual fabric for an everyday look or layered under an oversized suit jacket for the evening.
