Coat season is officially in full spring, and if a puffer jacket is too sporty for your taste, there’s sure to be a shearling coat to suit your cold-weather style needs

The shearling jacket is the versatile outerwear that keeps on giving. Originally designed during the First World War – when most aircraft did not have an enclosed cockpit – the heavy-duty leather jacket made its debut. Worn by pilots for warmth, the shearling-lined flight jacket has since its war-time origins become a staple, returning like clockwork to the runways in different iterations.
Today, the style is favoured by the Nordic fashion set for its functionality; the style was naturally included in our editorial ‘Easy Rider’ published in Vogue Scandinavia’s October-November issue. An ode to the road less travelled, the styling focused on chunky knits in earthy tones – the perfect trans-seasonal wardrobe.
As for the runways, Scandinavian models came out on the catwalks in full shearling and full force. Danish Mona Tougaard looked fabulous at Stand Studio during Copenhagen Fashion week, while Swedish model Malaika Holmén was spotted at Balmain and Jacquemus.
Made to last, a shearling jacket is worth the investment. When shopping for items that you can love and own for years – and perhaps even pass down one day – has become part of our collective push for a more sustainable future, it is an important factor to consider. Timeless silhouettes like the aviator or biker jacket are the perfect starter for a shearling coat investment: these are styles that will only look better with age.
Or why not opt for a reversible version. After all, what’s a better investment than a coat you can wear two different ways? These reversible jackets are the heavyweight champs of shearling coats. Wear them with their shearling lining exposed, or switch it up for a teddy-jacket look.
