Every first Monday in May, the elite of every creative subgroup gather on the steps of the hallowed halls of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. As the world watches, it has become clearer every year that despite being fashion's night of nights, the pop stars are the ones delivering the sartorial hits. Here Vogue Scandinavia's music expert Doris Daga discusses the importance of music and fashion merging on the red carpet, and how the 2022 Met Gala was a display of pop star perfection
When I think of the Met Gala I think about Rihanna's sunflower yellow Guo Pei creation at the 2015 Met Gala 'China: Through the Looking Glass'. A fashion (and music) moment so ingrained in my memory, I still remember where and when I was when I saw it for the first time.
Since then, Rihanna has always brought magnificence to the evening, from her 2018 'Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination' look to her 2021 'In America' Duvet ballgown. Rihanna has set the bar, and pop stars across the globe have willingly followed suit. And this year, from Lizzo to Olivia Rodrigo, pop stars have dominated the 2022 Met Gala red carpet proving music stars can be as high fashion as they come.
Fashion and music make each other stronger. When I think of an important moment in music history, it almost always is connected to an iconic time in fashion as well. A few examples would be Justin and Britney's 2001 denim moment, Madonna's performance of her classic Vogue at the MTV music awards in 1990 (also one of the best performances in history), Prince's purple suit for his Purple Rain era, Lady Gaga's entrance at the Met Gala complete in Brandon Maxwell for 'Camp: Notes on Fashion', or the time a bleached Taylor Swift famously met her current actor boyfriend Joe Alwyn at the 2016 celebration of 'Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology' dressed in Louis Vuitton.
It is safe to say it's an important night for everyone, a jaw-dropping Met Gala look can rocket an artist's record sales, and great record sales can (maybe) guarantee an invite to the prestigious event — so they work together, hand in hand like they always have.
So, for tonight, I expect the pop stars to bring it and they didn't disappoint. Below feast your eyes on the fashion x music moments that will go down in history. It’s not only what we deserve, but what we need.
