Unsurprisingly, Trine Dyrholm called upon longtime collaborator Soeren Le Schmidt to design her gown for the 2025 Oscars. The Danish designer gives us all the details around the elegant tuxedo-meets-gown look
There was never any question that Trine Dyrholm would wear Soeren Le Schmidt to the 2025 Oscars. The Danish designer has crafted nearly every significant red carpet look Dyrholm has worn for the past several years, including the elegant one-sleeved gown she wore to the Golden Globes. So when news broke that Dyrholm’s film The Girl with the Needle was nominated for an Oscar in the Best International Feature category, Le Schmidt knew it was time to pick up his own needle and thread. “I started working on the look as soon as it became clear that Trine would be attending the Oscars with The Girl with the Needle,” says Le Schmidt. “From the beginning, our conversations revolved around creating something timeless, elegant, and deeply connected to both Trine’s personal style and the film itself.”

In an homage to the film, which is shot in black and white, Le Schmidt created a masterfully tailored black and white gown, which marries “a classic men’s tuxedo” and “a striking evening gown”. “I’ve designed similar tux-inspired jumpsuits for Trine before, and I know how beautifully this style suits her,” says Le Schmidt. “It felt like a natural evolution.”
Crafted from a luxurious, fluid white fabric, contrasted against glossy black details – the sharp black patent lapel, the structured black belt – the look embodied a stunning duality of strength and femininity; a contrast also exemplified by the actor herself. “This was the perfect look for Trine at the Oscars because it embodies everything she stands for: strength, confidence, and effortless sophistication,” says Le Schmidt. “It’s minimalist yet striking, classic yet modern. And most importantly, it feels true to her.” The look is finished with two long black tails for a “dramatic yet refined touch”.

This wasn’t the first time a Le Schmidt creation was worn on Hollywood’s biggest night; just last year Le Schmidt attended the Oscars himself, wearing a daring tuxedo of his own design. “I wore a tuxedo-inspired look with an open back, revealing my full back tattoo,” he says. "It ended up being quite the conversation starter, and I even got compliments from Eva Longoria and Lenny Kravitz.”
This time around, however, marks the culmination of a beautiful collaboration between Trine and Le Schmidt. “Having Trine wear my design at the Oscars is incredibly special,” says Le Schmidt. “We’ve worked together for many years, and I deeply respect her talent and presence. Seeing her on such a grand stage, in a look that we created together, is truly an honour.”
