Jeans make up a crucial part of Scandinavia’s sartorial DNA. With our relaxed relationships to our wardrobes, the garment is essential whether office bound, lounging around on the weekend, or dressing up for drinks.
As a staple in functional dressing, the utility trouser has seen many shifts in shape over the years. High-waisted or low-waisted, stonewashed or raw denim, skinny or wide-legged; A rose by any other name still smells as sweet. Today, we want a spacious silhouette in a heavy fabric. The wide-legged denim – reminiscent of the JNCO jeans of the 1990s – has stood the test of time.

Admittedly tricky to style, we look to the runways for direction as there’s brilliant inspiration to embrace in both the autumn/winter 2021 and spring/summer 2022 collections. Denim on denim was transformed from cringe red-carpet garb (We’re looking at you Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake) to high-fashion essential as Maison Rabih Kayrouz, Tiger of Sweden and Victoria Beckham presented matchy-matchy looks. On other runways, the rough fabric was given feminine flair with frills and ruffles. Tulle tops traversed the catwalks at Molly Goddard and Valentino, creating a beautiful contrast in texture.
Surveying our offices, it has become apparent that the main styling concern related to a swathing silhouette is the choice of shoes. A basic white chunky sneaker or black statement boot helps balance the wide leg (as expertly presented by Celine for their autumn/winter 2021 collection), while a pointed heel in a bright pop of colour à la Balenciaga SS22 helps elevate the casual fabric.

In summary, the trick of the trade when it comes to oversized denim is keeping a keen eye on proportions. At JW Anderson, Danish model Mona Tougaard sported our favourite shade of the season in an expertly paired look.
But what are the best wide-legged jeans to buy right now? Below, Vogue Scandinavia has curated a collection of swathing denim to indulge in.
